The International Day of Democracy is a reaffirmation by the international community of its commitment to build participatory and inclusive societies, based on the rule of law and fundamental human rights.

Democracy is not only an end in itself; it contributes powerfully to economic and social progress, international peace and security and respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.

The democratization process has been slow but the activities on the ground reflect some improvements.

To mark this day there are going to be various activities to be held in Somalia.
In Somaliland a panel will discuss:-

•    Democracy and Islam “Comparative Study”
•    Role of Academic Institutions in the promotion of Peace and Democracy in Somaliland, in the context of Somaliland Institutional Perspectives “past, Present and the future?”
•    How can the inclusion of traditional leadership systems and structures or lack of it help and/or hinder process of democrization in Somaliland?

In Puntland there will be a number of presentations focusing on:-

•    Democratization process and Women’s participation in the Context of Puntland Institutional Perspectives “What is happening on the ground and what are the responses?”
•    The roles of the international organizations and inter-governmental institutions on the democratization process in Puntland in the past and future.
•    How can the inclusion of traditional leadership systems and structures or lack of it help and/or hinder participation of women in the democratization process of Puntland?

In South Central the day will be marked by songs and poems emphasizing the importance of the democratization processes and their significance to a country in conflict.

On this International Day, let us rededicate ourselves to the democratic principles, and to promoting peace, development and human rights through the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law.
