Partnering for community security
Wednesday, 11 February 2009
UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF, and UNFPA, international and local non governmental organizations working on reducing armed violence agreed on a framework to work together on community security.

UNDP and partners recognize the importance to actively involve the communities to work in partnership with local authorities and improve security. They aim, through this initiative, to break the cycle of violence both through preventive action, ie peaceful conflict management to neutralize factors generating armed violence and through curative action to help rehabilitated victims overcome trauma and reintegrate society.

The involvement of regional and local authorities, as well as of communities in the development and implementation stages of the project will ensure the appropriation of the community security approach. This will facilitate the emergence of a consensus and of measures allowing communities to definitively break the cycle of violence.

The partners in this initiative will collaborate to share experiences and existing tools that they have already developed in order to reduce armed violence at the community level.
