Monday, 08 June 2009
Today, World Environment Day, is a reminder to us all to treat our planet better and lighten our carbon footprint. Climate change is a threat to everyone. But without action, the brunt of the impact would be felt by poor and vulnerable people in developing countries. With little capacity to cope, many more would become malnourished and in some circumstances struggle to find water, and even be displaced. This highlights just how intertwined the tasks of addressing climate change, reducing global poverty, and reaching the Millennium Development Goals are.

Story of a returnee

“Your country needs your positive contributions, in whatever form they may be,” remarks Hassan Bulbul, a 49-year old returnee from the United States of America, targeting his message to all his fellow Diaspora. Bulbul, a father of two, studied Accounting at a university in Virginia, in the US, where he spent 27 years of his life. In 1997, he decided to move to Kampala, Uganda, to start a business. All along, like several other Somali Diaspora, Bulbul maintained his ties with people back home. Five years ago, he decided to move back to Somalia to look after his ailing father and siblings. Now living in Hargeisa, Bulbul had initially moved to Mogadishu, where he spent his years as a child.

Forging Partnerships with the Somali Diaspora
Friday, 03 April 2009

Early this year, UNDP commissioned a study to assess the Somali Diaspora’s contribution to Somalia -- in the form of humanitarian assistance, remittances and participation in recovery, reconstruction and development.
The intended outcome of the study, and a subsequent workshop held in Nairobi in March, was to obtain recommendations on future engagement between the UN and international development partners, the Somali Diaspora and civil society actors.

The workshop provided a rare opportunity for representatives of the Somali Diaspora to meet with Somali civil society actors, UN and donors to discuss ways of how partnerships could be built between the actors for better and more effective development results.

The report entitled Somalia’s Mission Million: the Somali Diaspora and its Role in Development highlights where and how the Diaspora’s efforts are focused in Somalia. It provides trends of Diaspora activities and interests in the country. By summarizing workshop findings, it provides specific guidance on future collaboration: the forging of a new partnership between the UN and international community and the Somali Diaspora, to work together with Somalis to enhance development in the country.
The understanding of Diaspora activities will assist the international community in conducting activities more effectively, given the Diaspora’s proven contribution and experience, coupled with their knowledge of local conditions throughout the country.
