| Communities fixing Mogadishu hospital |
|
23/09/2009 Local communities are completing the rehabilitation of the Banadir Hospital in Mogadishu, which laboratory needs fixing and new equipment. The Banadir Hospital provides medical treatment free of charge to some 300 patients a day but is overwhelmed by the increasing number of patients suffering from malaria, cholera, TB and other infectious diseases. The community elders and the hospital management committee have identified the rehabilitation of the laboratory premises (which have been destroyed or looted during the war) as a priority. The rehabilitated hospital will improve access to health to the community, as well as provide short term employment to nearly 400 people from the local community. The project is implemented in close collaboration with the local committees and authorities, which will manage the hospital after completion. This work is taking place under UNDP’s Employment Generation for Early Recovery project , which provides employment opportunities and income for vulnerable populations in Somalia, particularly women, marginalized groups and youth. |
