Mine Action

Running from August 2002 to December 2011

Landmines and explosive remnants of war negatively affect the security of all inhabitants of Somalia, whether directly because of their presence in habited areas or indirectly through the contamination of key strategic infrastructure.

UNDP seeks to establish a functional national demining capacity. To do so, UNDP strengthens mine action coordination and clearance capacity and runs field Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams in line with international mine action standards.

The key partners are Swedish Rescue Agency, the Government of Switzerland, and UN Mine Action Services.

The project has concentrated on establishing mine action centres, training courses and quality control systems to deal with the residual landmine and unexploded ordnance threat and undertake other mine action functions. It also has provided international technical advisors with expertise in mine action.

Gathering and storing information pertaining to explosive remnants of war has concentrated on establishing Information Management System for Mine Action staff and building their capacity to develop a mine-related database.

Trained and equipped police Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams in selected regions – UNDP has provided new equipment to the teams.

UNDP started its mine action work in Somalia in 1992.
