Judiciary / Access to justice

Running from August 2002 to December 2011

UNDP seeks to strengthen the functional capacities of the judiciary system and to improve access to justice for all Somalis, particularly poor and vulnerable women, men and children. The project has strengthened institutions through training and infrastructure rehabilitation, has raised awareness, and has provided access to legal clinics, legal aid and translation at the community level. The programme is not only seeking to train and build the capacity of the legal profession; it also works on providing access to justice for the most vulnerable communities in those areas that lack state institutions.

Under the judiciary project, UNDP has established mobile courts, built the capacity of the legal profession, drafted a code of conduct for the judiciary, prosecutors, and the wider legal profession, and helped established the first Women Lawyers Association in Somalia.

Expenditure for this project in 2008: 3,581,520US$
