Flood Mitigation and Watershed Management |
|
Running from July 2008 to December 2009 This project enhances the emergency protection of flood-affected communities through the construction and rehabilitation of river embankments, flood relief canals, water catchments and river barrages. These activities are implemented through community-based organizations and local NGOs in South Central Somalia.
To date, UNDP has built or rehabilitated 60 irrigation gates, which feed 250 km-long canals that in turn irrigate a total of 60,000 hectares. In addition, the project has just completed the rehabilitation of seven irrigation canals 35 km in length. The project supported the rehabilitation of rural access roads and community markets: 150 km of rural access roads have been rehabilitated and two community markets have been completed. Five km-long flood relief canals have also been built. Expenditure for this project for 2008: 2,436,068US$.
