Italian money to boost recovery efforts in Somalia

Nairobi/Rome 15 May 2008 – The Italian Cooperation has given €5million ($7.7million) to three UNDP projects in Somalia, which aim to provide employment opportunities, help the government manage its key functions, and to boost district-based peace building efforts in the troubled Horn of Africa nation.

The Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS)/Italian Cooperation is the department within the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for the coordination and implementation of the government's aid programmes.  The funds were announced at a meeting last week between UNDP Somalia and the Italian Cooperation in Nairobi, Kenya.

UNDP supports establishment of Women Lawyers’ Association in SomalilandUNDP has supported the establishment of the Women Lawyers’ Association in Somaliland (SWLA) which opened early in 2008.  The Association is the first female lawyers’ association not only in Somaliland, but in all of Somalia.    

This is an extremely important step, both in terms of assisting female lawyers in their professional career and in providing appropriate and gender-sensitive legal advice to women in Somaliland.
 
Stage is set for justice reform in Somaliland
A five-day workshop in March produced a landmark 10-point Declaration that sets the stage for justice reform in Somaliland.Covering such issues as ensuring the judiciary has adequate facilities in which to practice, the need for a judicial code of conduct, reform of outdated and incompatible laws and the requirement to draft new laws, the document was drafted by UNDP on behalf of the Somaliland Ministry of Justice.
