  • UNDP youth leadership and peacebuilding programme opens in Mogadishu, part of wider youth for peace initiative Oct 27, 2017

    A week-long competitive UNDP Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) has started today in Mogadishu, which will see 30 young men and women learn how to take leadership roles to bring about social transformation, build peace, and spearhead innovative ideas in reducing barriers to employment and economic development in Somalia. Selected participants from the training in Mogadishu will go on to receive further in-depth training at a UNDP Arab States regional leadership event in Cairo.

  • Somalia Starts Drought Impact Needs Assessment, global experts convene in Mogadishu Oct 9, 2017

    High-level technical experts from around the world have met this weekend in Mogadishu to kickstart a Government-led Drought Impact Needs Assessment (DINA), which will identify the drivers and impact of recurrent drought, and outline long-term solutions that can prevent famine as a result of drought. The assessment will be followed by the development of a Recovery and Resilience Framework (RRF) that will address the identified needs and enable preventative developmental solutions to be carried out alongside the delivery of humanitarian relief, so that Somalia may be able to transition towards sustainable recovery and disaster preparedness.

  • First ever social innovation entrepreneurial challenge for young people opens in Mogadishu Oct 2, 2017

    The first ever “Innovate for Somalia” social innovation camp has opened in Mogadishu today, which will see over 50 young Somali men and women brainstorm and come up with business ideas to improve the Somali dairy industry. The event, which will run over 7 days, will conclude with a finale on the 9th October, with the young people forming teams to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and win support for their idea. The winning teams will then enter a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) incubation initiative to learn how to take their idea to market.

  • Somali MPs attend leadership training on gender equality Sep 30, 2017

    Somalia MPs and Senators from both Federal and State parliaments have attended a first of its kind, five day “Transformative Leadership for Results” training in Entebbe, Uganda to enhance their leadership skills to transform Somali organizations, institutions and society at large, and to allow them to levarage their influence to promote gender responsive legal and policy reforms.

  • Somalia launches Post Disaster Needs Assessment and Resilience Framework Sep 19, 2017

    At a meeting in Mogadishu on Monday the Federal Government of Somalia launched a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), to analyze the recurrent impact of drought in the country. The Assessment will allow for the development of a Recovery and Resilience Framework (RRF) which will provide a platform for development of investment into long-term resilience and reduction of risk to disaster. The assessment and framework will be a vital first step in enabling Somalia to transition from humanitarian intervention towards sustainable recovery and disaster preparedness.

  • Solar lanterns to bring clean energy and safety to IDP communities in Mogadishu Sep 11, 2017

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) yesterday handed over 600 solar powered lanterns to Somalia’s Federal Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management. The lanterns will be distributed to female headed households within IDP (internally displaced persons) communities in Mogadishu, as part of a renewable energy project financed by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).

  • Benadir Regional Administration committed to delivering durable solutions to displaced people in Mogadishu Sep 8, 2017

    The Benadir Regional Administration (BRA) has officially started implementation of a €13.3 million project funded by the European Union to assist displaced people to integrate into communities, which will be carried out in partnership with UN agencies and NGOs. This EU-funded project, directly aligned with the National Development Plan of Somalia, will benefit displaced people and host communities alike, through the provision of employment opportunities and greater access to basic services such as affordable housing, protection, GBV prevention, legal assistance and improved livelihood opportunities. In total, it is expected that more than 84,000 people will benefit from this project.

  • Jubbaland launches local governance law and district council formation Aug 21, 2017

    Jubbaland State authorities have launched a landmark Local Government Law and started district council formation process for five districts across the State. The launch of the law and council formation process lays the foundation for the roll out of local governance services to Somali people in Jubbaland.

  • Solar power at Villa Somalia Aug 13, 2017

    Encouraging the use of renewable energy across the country, the Federal Government of Somalia on Sunday launched a solar power system for the Office of the Prime Minister in Mogadishu. The UN development agency (UNDP), together with the Ministry of Energy and Water, have installed 298 solar panels – a 76KVA hybrid solar system – which will allow saving 35% fuel consumption at Villa Somalia, or 120 litres daily.
