Short Film Competition

Sep 20, 2017

Background

Are you an aspiring filmmaker? Would you like to make a short film about innovation in Somalia?

For six days from Monday 2nd to Saturday the 7th Oct, UNDP will hold the first of a series of “Innovate for Somalia” camps where young people from all over Somalia will brainstorm and come up with ideas to solve complex issues that affect society.

The first camp starting on the 2nd Oct will see a diverse group of young innovators with different skills (engineers, artists, programmers, designers, marketing etc.), that are passionate about community development, come up with innovative ideas to improve the Somali dairy industry.

The people with the top ideas will receive mentoring and support from UNDP's Incubator in Somalia and an opportunity to participate in a UNDP regional Youth Leadership event in Cairo from the 1st- 3rd December 2017.

We would like you to tell the story of the innovation camp and of the entrepreneurs who make it to the top and win support for their ideas.

The Short Film Challenge - what we would like you to do:

There are two phases.

Phase One: If you have been selected we would like you to attend and produce a short 3 minute film on the six day innovation camp starting on Monday 2nd October 2017 in Mogadishu. You must also attend a briefing session on Sunday the 1st October 2017 in Mogadishu.

There will then be a final “pitching” of ideas event on 9 October 2017 in Mogadishu which we would like you to include in the film.

The short film will be on the theme “Innovating for Somalia” and contain the following three elements:  (i) what the innovation camp is and hopes to achieve for development in Somalia, (ii) what the participants think about the camp, and then (iii) focus on the finalists with the top ideas for improving the dairy industry.

The top two films produced will win a trip to Cairo on 1-3rd December for the next phase of the challenge. The third runner up will receive a cash prize of USD $500.

Phase Two:  The top two producers from phase one will accompany the finalists of the dairy industry entreprenuership challenge to Cairo.  We would then like you to complete the story by filming each finalist’s journey to Cairo and what it means for them, producing a final five minute short film. The film must start with the innovation camp and conclude in Cairo, on the theme “Innovating for Somalia” and how this might contribute to development in Somalia. It is also possible to add a “what next” piece to the video.

What are the prizes? The first and second place films from phase one will win a trip to Cairo for the next phase. The runner up from phase one will win a $500 cash prize but will not go to Cairo.

The winning film from phase two will receive a cash prize of $2,000. The runner up from phase two will receive a cash prize of $1,000.
