Mogadishu 27 August - The United Nations Under-Secretary-General Mr. Jeffrey Feltman visited the Somali National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) as part of a high-level visit to Somalia on Friday. The Commission presented Mr Feltman with its preparatory plans for universal elections by 2021, with NIEC Chairperson Halima Ismail Ibrahim outlining the importance of the steps that need to be taken by all stakeholders, to achieve what will be the first general elections in the country since 1969.

Ms Ibrahim reiterated the Commission’s determination and positive outlook in achieving universal elections in the country, but highlighted that the process will need continued political support from the Federal Government of Somalia and the international community, including the United Nations. She concluded by thanking the United Nations for its ongoing support to the NIEC and Somalia as the country moves towards democratization.

NIEC‘s work towards universal elections is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), and with funding from the EU, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
