Effective Institutions

The Effective Institutions portfolio focuses on supporting Somali people to rebuild institutions decimated from a two decade long civil war, continued drought, climate induced crises, and ongoing confilct. Slow progress in this area is being made by the Government of Somalia with the upport of the UN and international partners.  In 2016 the Government held an electoral process that resulted in a peaceful transition of power.  A joint Government led, UN supported reconciliation, peacebuilding and federalism process led to four new federal member states, Galmadug, Hirshabelle, Jubaland and South West State, emerging during 2015-2017. During 2016 the country also developed the 2017-2019 National Development Plan (NDP), with the support of UNDP, which prioritised Somali led development goals and objectives. UNDP supports the Government of Somalia and authorities to build effective institutions which deliver  accountable governnace and services to Somali people through the following main support areas: Local Governance, Aid Coordination, Institutional Capacity Building, Innovation, Anti Corruption, Human Resource Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Planning, M&E and Statistics and Support to Stabilization.
